HOU.SYS ALONG THE RIVER DES PERES

The River des Peres was a small urban river in St. Louis burdened with heavy industrial uses and sewage disposals. The river was treated as an unwelcomed guest in many neighborhoods until recently when the government initiated the “Greenway Project”. Through Public-Private Partnership, this riverfront residential project re-envisions the relationship between the natural landscape and the man-made architecture through reconnecting the communities to the River des Peres. The site was selected to achieve a maximum visual cone angle and the closest view towards the river. A hou.sys was then proposed on the site to accommodate an existing Walgreen store, transforming the landscape into a friendly community. Each unit was designed to have its maximum view facing the river while the river bank was also reshaped to facilitate the view. In addition, the roof of the Walgreen was re-designed into a green roof coupled with residential amenities.
